PIANO WIRE MATERIALS - WHY IT MATTERS
The materials that go into your piano wire impact sound quality and durability.
Most quality piano strings consist of high-carbon steel to ensure greater tensile strength. Inferior steel is not able to withstand the tension placed on it for long. With quality steel, you receive a clear and consistent tone.
SOUND QUALITY
Your piano’s sound quality is affected by your wire quality in 3 main ways:
- High-quality wire produces a pure tone with better sustain and resistance
- Higher-quality steel provides better tension and elasticity for treble and middle-range notes
- The copper winding quality on bass strings adds depth and tonal quality
TUNING
The higher the quality of your wire, the longer you can go without needing to tune your piano.
- High-quality steel helps your piano strings better maintain their pitch, requiring less frequent tuning
- Low-quality steel leads your wire to get overstretched and loosened more quickly
- Low-quality piano wire materials corrode faster
- High-quality materials can better handle more intense stress from persistent playing
- Humidity and temperature variations affect high-quality steel less than lower-quality steel
PIANO STRINGS - LENGTH AND QUALITY
The length of your piano wire is not as significant as the materials it is made of. But longer strings, in some cases have produced a much more resonant tone. They can create a deeper sound and resonate farther.
The number that matters when ordering wire is the musical wire gauge (MWG). This standardized measurement for the wire’s diameter is applied across the piano parts manufacturing industry. Its purpose is to provide precise specifications and to make wire replacement straightforward.
Our piano wire is manufactured by Roslau, offering the highest quality. We primarily stock 500g musical wire rolls from 1 MWG to 27 MWG that offer perfect elasticity, returning to their unstretched length after release. We also offer tin-plated wire in some sizes. PIANO WIRE STORAGE
Equally important to the quality of your piano wire is the way you store it. Undesirable environmental conditions can lead to:
- Oxidation
- Rust
- Dust
- Coiling
- Tension
So, be sure to store your wire in a non-humid, ideally room-temperature area.
